Lake Oswego Police Launch Unmanned Aircraft System Program
LAKE OSWEGO – The Lake Oswego Police Department (LOPD) is pleased to announce the activation of an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) program, commonly referred to as drones, to help our officers respond to emergencies more safely and effectively.
The police department intends to use these tools in emergency situations, including search and rescue operations, locating missing persons, responding to natural disasters, and supporting first responders during critical incidents. With advanced technology, these small aircraft offer an aerial perspective of situations that might otherwise be difficult or unsafe for officers to reach quickly, reducing risks to both officers and the community.
All UAS deployments will strictly adhere to constitutional and privacy rights, Oregon law, and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations.
The department has nine officers who have completed comprehensive training, including FAA testing and ground school, to ensure they are fully prepared to properly and safely operate the UAS.
