Storm Drain Marking Program
Help Protect Our Waterways—Only Rain Down the Drain
Did you know that anything goes down a storm drain can end up in our local rivers, streams, and even the ocean? Unlike wastewater drains, storm drains aren't connected to treatment plants. They carry runoff directly into our waterways, which means pollutants like oils, chemicals, pet waste, and litter can cause harm to the environment and wildlife.
What is Storm Drain Marking?
Our Storm Drain Marking Program helps raise awareness in the community by placing bright, visible markers on storm drains. These markers serve as reminders that only rain should go down the drain, preventing harmful pollutants from entering our water systems. Along with these markers, we distribute informational door hangers to remind residents of the importance of keeping our stormwater clean.
Why it Matters
Storm drain marking accomplishes several goals:
- Protects Water Quality: By educating the community and encouraging responsible waste disposal, we help prevent pollution from entering our rivers, lakes, and streams.
- Promotes Clean Waterways: The program emphasizes that pollutants such as chemicals, oils, and trash can poison local wildlife and disrupt delicate ecosystems.
- Builds Community Engagement: The program invites community groups, schools, scouts, and local organizations to volunteer and make a positive impact on the environment.
How You Can Get Involved
Installing storm drain markers is a simple yet impactful project that’s great for community groups, scouts, schools, or neighborhoods. Both children and adults can participate in this hands-on initiative!
- What’s Involved: Volunteers will install easy-to-apply markers on storm drains, helping to spread the message: "Only Rain Down the Drain."
- Group Size: We recommend having at least six people in your group, but even smaller, motivated teams can make a difference!
- Get Started: It’s easy to get involved! Simply reach out to us to sign up and get supplies for your group.
