Recycle Batteries Curbside
You can recycle batteries curbside if you live in a single-family home with garbage and recycling services in Clackamas County. See Clackamas County's website for details on types of batteries accepted and how to prepare them: https://www.clackamas.us/recycling/batteries.
Drop-Off Disposal Options
The program is currently limited to single-family households at this time. Residents of multifamily buildings and those who do not subscribe to curbside garbage and recycling service can recycle batteries at Metro South’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility in Oregon City (free drop-off up to 35 gallons) and at other drop-off locations including Batteries Plus Bulbs and Lowes or Home Depot (rechargeable batteries only). Contact Metro’s Recycling Information Center at 503-234-3000 or use their Find a Recycler tool to find disposal options near you.
Why does this matter?
Collecting batteries separately ensures safe handling, disposal and recycling. Batteries can spark and cause fires in garbage trucks and transfer stations, putting workers' lives in danger and causing costly damage to equipment and facilities. Collecting batteries separately from other waste and taping batteries that are most likely to cause fires helps to prevent fires. Batteries contain metals that can be harmful to human health and the environment if they are not properly disposed of. Proper disposal also helps ensure we can recover and recycle valuable materials that some batteries include, like lithium and steel, reducing environmental impacts of producing new products.
