Rassekh Skatepark

Project Update

Effective immediately (9/24/24), parking at the Bethlehem Christian Pre-School is no longer available for use by skatepark visitors. This decision was made with the start of the school year to prioritize the safety of families during drop-off, pick-up, and other pre-school activities. Ensuring a safe environment for everyone, including nearby families and children, is our top priority. Please be aware that this is a private property and parking enforcement measures, including towing, may be in place.

We apologize for this inconvenience to our skatepark users, but there’s good news on the horizon! The parking lot at Rassekh Park is nearing completion, and we expect it to be ready for public use in mid-October. Once finished, the new driveway and parking lot, accessed from Atherton Drive, will provide on-site parking spaces with close access to the skatepark. In the meantime, we encourage visitors to consider alternative transportation options like walking, biking, or skating to the park.

We’re delighted to see the community embracing the new Rassekh Skatepark, with skaters of all ages, skill levels, and wheels enjoying the space.

September 24, 2024

The new restroom building was installed on September 6, thanks to the hard work of our crew and a crane. Over the next few weeks, utility connections, including electricity and plumbing, will be completed. We expect the restrooms to be ready for use by mid-October. The building will feature four private, gender-neutral restrooms, two of which are fully ADA accessible. These facilities will be available during regular park hours.

August 20, 2024

Since the soft opening in July, we have welcomed many skaters of all ages and abilities. We continue to work on the park with Phase 1 additions including the new restroom.

July 1, 2024

While Phase 1 of Rassekh Park is still under construction for a few more months, we are thrilled to announce that the skatepark is open as of June 14, 2024.

Thank you to the Lake Oswego City Councilors, community advocates, park neighbors, contractors, and designers who made this project possible! This park was carefully designed to offer something for all ages, abilities, and wheels.

Important Details:

  • Keep the skating surface clear. Graffiti, paint, or stickers applied to the skating surface will create glare and slick skating conditions and may result in the skatepark being closed until the surface can be cleaned. Protect this park, and do not paint or apply stickers to the skatepark.

  • Keep the park clean. Help us keep the park clean and safe for everyone to enjoy. Put all trash into designated trash receptacles. Glass containers are prohibited in the skatepark.

  • Be respectful of nearby neighbors. Keep noise levels to a minimum, and don’t use profanity or play loud music. Amplified sound is prohibited in Lake Oswego parks except for City-approved events.

  • Skate safe. Skate within your abilities and follow basic skatepark etiquette. Look before you skate, and pay attention to your surroundings while skating. This is a non-supervised facility; skate at your own risk.

  • Take turns. This is an all-wheels, all-ages, all-abilities park. Be patient and let everyone have a chance to ride.

  • Follow park rules. Use or possession of drugs, tobacco, and alcohol is prohibited on park property.

  • Park hours. The skatepark is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

  • Bike and walk access. Use the Hazelia Agri-Cultural Heritage Trail (east side of Stafford Rd) or the new multi-use path (west side of Stafford Rd). Please use designated crosswalks on Stafford Rd. and Overlook Dr.

Stay tuned for the ribbon cutting and public grand opening next year after the playground is completed.

The 2023 City Council Goals include an initiative to “invest in Lake Oswego’s high-quality parks, natural areas, and recreational amenities” by developing a funding strategy for Rassekh Park and constructing Phase 1, which includes the skatepark. Following this direction, Lake Oswego Parks & Recreation solicited bids to construct Phase I of the project in early June. On June 27 Lake Oswego City Council awarded a contract for the general construction of Phase I of Rassekh Park. The skatepark will be constructed concurrently but through a separate contract with California Skateparks, who also designed the project.Construction will begin in July 2023 and is expected to be complete in early summer 2024.

In addition to the skatepark, Phase I of Rassekh Park will include construction of the all public right-of-way improvements for Stafford Road (street trees, street lights, etc.); reconstruction and widening of the multi-use path along Stafford Road; construction of the new access road from Atherton Drive; a portion of the paved parking lot and a temporary gravel overflow parking area; and the restroom building. Phase I will also provide critical utilities to the site (water, stormwater, and sanitary sewer service and electricity), all of which will be needed to serve the full build-out of the park. For more information on the Rassekh Park project, click here. We are committed to completing the full build-out of Rassekh Park, and are working to develop a funding strategy to build the next phase as soon as possible.

What is this project about?

In October 2021 City Council directed Lake Oswego Parks & Recreation to develop a new 10,000-square-foot skatepark as part of Rassekh Park. This decision was based on community feedback received through the Rassekh Park design and public outreach process, as well as public testimony in support of the skatepark at City Council meetings. Lake Oswego's former skatepark was closed in 2015 to make room for the new Maintenance Building. We are very excited to be partnering with California Skateparks to design and build this new skating facility for the Lake Oswego community.

Where will the skatepark be located?

The Rassekh property is a 9.8-acre property located on Stafford Road, just northwest of the roundabout at Stafford Road and Atherton Drive. The property was originally acquired by the City in 1996 as a result of the 1990 Parks Bond, with the intention of being developed as a park with opportunities for active recreation for the community. The skatepark will be located in the northeast corner of the Rassekh Park property and will be integrated with the park's network of trails and other park elements such as the multi-sport athletic field, picnic shelter, restrooms, drinking fountains, seating, and play area. Click here to learn more about the overall design for the Rassekh Park.

Project Updates:

January 16: This past month, a lot of progress on the Skatepark was made with the shotcrete applications! What's Shotcrete? It's the secret ingredient to a smooth skate surface. The highly-skilled and unique application uses a high-strength concrete mix sprayed on through a special nozzle, projecting it at a high velocity into forms over reinforced rebar. The force at which the concrete is projected from the nozzle allows for efficient placement of the material, even on the vertical surfaces and organic shapes of a skatepark. We are thrilled to be working with the experienced team of designers and builders at California Skateparks, supported by a local team from Collective Concrete & Construction.

October 18, 2023: California Skatepark is mobilized on-site and continues to do fine grading in preparation for concrete.

September 13, 2023: Initial digging of the skatepark started.

June 27, 2023: City Council awarded the construction contract for Phase I of Rassekh Park to Paul Brothers, Inc. Construction will begin this month and is expected to be complete in early summer 2024. This will start the process for California Skatepark to work with Paul Brothers on constructing the skatepark and areas around the skatepark.

June 20, 2023: Tree removal work was initiated at Rassekh Park in order to prepare the site for Phase I construction later this summer. Tree removal work is expected to be underway through June 30.

April 2023: The 2023 City Council Goals include an initiative to “Invest in Lake Oswego’s high-quality parks, natural areas, and recreational amenities” by developing a funding strategy for Rassekh Park and constructing Phase 1, which includes the skatepark. Following this direction, Lake Oswego Parks & Recreation is moving forward with soliciting bids to construct the first phase of the project. Phase 1 will include the skatepark, public restrooms, a new access road, and a portion of the parking lot. In addition, Phase 1 will set the stage for future development by constructing the public right-of-way improvements and the backbone for the utilities that are required to support the full build-out of the park. The multi-sports athletic field, play area, walking trails, covered picnic area, and maintenance building will be constructed in a future phase. Bid information will be presented to Council in May.

December 2022: Bids were opened in November 2022; however the bids came in significantly higher than expected. On December 20 the City Council voted to postpone the Rassekh Park project until a funding strategy is developed.

September 2022: Bid documents are being prepared and the release date for the Request for Bids is October 11.

August 2022: The land use application was approved at the Development Review Commission meeting on July 18 and findings were approved on August 1.

May 2022: The design process is now complete. Thank you to all who participated!
