1989 Historic Resource Cultural Resource Inventory and Protection Plan

The City’s preservation program was developed in response to Statewide Planning Goal 5 (Natural Resources, Scenic and Historic Areas, and Open Spaces). The city inventoried historic resources in 1976 and then again in 1988 - 1989. The most recent inventory serves as the required “plan inventory” to comply with the requirements of Statewide Planning Goal 5. Over 200 properties were inventoried and 93 were originally found to be significant and listed on the Landmark Designation List (LDL) which was adopted on March 15, 1990 (Ordinance 2000). Several properties have been removed from the Landmark Designation List or demolished and 72 properties remain.

The Historic Resource Protection Plan supports the Cultural Resources Inventory and aids the City and the community to identify and address historic resources.  It serves as a strategic planning tool to help the community plan for these historic resources. The plan provides information about historic trends, properties, and individuals in the history of the community and provides the framework for rational, consistent decision-making in the management of these cultural resources.  It serves as the basis for establishing historic preservation plans, and context statements for the city’s distinct historic periods. The plan also includes measures for local and National Register designation and development of protective and promotional measures for significant resources.
