A Rake is All it Takes
Help Reduce Localized Flooding
As leaves fall, storm drains can get blocked by debris, leading to localized flooding. These drains are vital for keeping streets and sidewalks clear of excess rainwater as well as maintaining stormwater quality standards.
While Public Works crews maintain thousands of drains, we need your help. Simply clearing leaves and debris from the surface of catch basins near your property with a broom or rake can keep the drainage system functioning well. Remember, don't remove the grate, just the debris on top. Your small effort can make a big difference during the rainy season.
Reminder: Do not put leaves onto the street. Lake Oswego City Code prohibits blowing, sweeping, raking, or otherwise depositing debris onto sidewalks or streets.
Big piles of leaves might seem harmless, but they damage our street sweepers and block storm drains—leading to flooding and water pollution.
Our sweepers can’t handle massive leaf piles. Large piles jam the equipment, slow operations, and prevent sweepers from reaching other neighborhoods.
Put leaves and other yard debris in your yard waste bins for easy removal and recycling.
Organize a Leaf Collection!
For a great opportunity to meet your neighbors, organize a community leaf clean-up! Gathering leaves helps improve water quality and reduce flooding.
The City has a limited number of free drop boxes available to support neighborhood clean-up events through a contract agreement with Republic Services. Neighborhoods can apply for a free drop box to help collect neighborhood leaves. Drop boxes can be reserved on weekends, with a Friday delivery and Monday pickup.
